I like this classic Car & Driver comparison article on Porsche Longhoods. It compared the 912, 911T Targa, 911E, and 911S.

The 912 and 911T Targa received remarkably high grades.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I would really like a 911T.

Me too. I’m constantly tempted by their great style and the hot rod potential.

Lol

All the cars continually backfired through the exhaust system on trailing throttle. Porsche claims that no damage results from the AA/Fueler deportment, but the popping and cracking certainly is out of keeping with the otherwise excellent manners the 911T displayed in traffic.

I n the year 2020, we call this a ‘feature’ not a ‘bug.’

I had a friend who had one. He absolutely hated it, unreliable and honestly too slow to really have fun in.

Then again it also had a 4-speed shift knob on it and I don’t think he realized/discovered it was a 5-speed car until about six months before he got rid of it. And it had a dogleg transmission on it, so that extra gear he found was 1st, not 5th.

In fact, BMW will pipe this sound into your 328 M-Sport!

It would have been extremely difficult to imagine pulling the trigger on a 912 during the height of the muscle car heyday. They cost roughly the same as a contemporary Corvette or Boss 429! I’d have snagged something that still handled like a Z/28 or Boss 302.

That’s not a crazy take at all. If I were buying a new car at that time, it would be a Ford Cobra 289. No question.

Yeah I have to assume that having a first gear helped the ownership experience. That said he still hated it, I think he’d initially bought it to flip, but then really regretted that decision. If I remember correctly he sold a super beat down, very high mileage E30 M3 to buy the 912 and it was just never going to measure up to the BMW from a driving fun standpoint.

He also won a pristine NA Miata in a raffle that year, which was probably a pretty stark contrast to the poor 912 (the Miata was more fun, faster, way more reliable, pretty much better in every way and...free)
